I've been analyzing my Obsidian vault using local LLMs that I run via Apple's mlx_lm. I'm on an M4 MacBook Pro with 48GB RAM.
The results are ... okay. The biggest problem is that I can't run some of the largest models on my hardware. The ones I'm running (mostly Qwen 3 at different numbers of parameters and quantization levels) often produce hallucinations. Overall, I can't say this is a practical or useful setup, but I'm just playing around so I don't mind.
That said, I doubt SOTA models would be that much better at this task. IMO LLM generated summaries and insights are never very good or useful. They're fine for assessing whether a particular text is worth reading, but they often extract the wrong information, or miss some critical information, or over-focus on one specific part of the text.
No idea but Qwen 2.5 VL seems to understand it all quite well.

I'm super happy with the performance, I generally run with 2 parallel slots so I only get about 128K context window. My experience with all llms is that they get more forgetful if you use the full window. (256-512K is the sweet spot for frontier models, 128k works for me with this current qwen)

Qwen 3.6 35B (finetuned) is so good that it became standard open weights for everyday use. Is not far at all from proprietary models if you give it tools, skills and agents etc, it can actually finish the job. (Thank you Qwen team, appreciated). Using opensource now we can definitely rely to design from scratch very complicated architecture and build pretty fast the full pack.

I want something like this but not only for my own computer but also for client projects or stuff I might run in cloud GPUs. Because the core idea of having a strong model that is efficient and doesn't require a cluster still applies to a lot of business cases. I am hoping something like this can work in batch mode.
Right now I feel like a 4bit Qwen 3.6 27B with MTP is one of the best for agentic tool calling for some smart voice agents in an H200. I wonder if DS4 Flash being using 80b at 2 bit with 13b active and MTP could be even faster and smarter and allow more concurrent sequences?
This special 2bit quantization seems like a big deal.
